Editors Note:

We expected the Russell to trigger some profit taking when it hit its prior high of 1,707. That happened at the opening spike and selling was immediate until 2:PM. Buyers appeared at 1,690 and the index began to recover. The Nasdaq came within 4 points of its high by 10:45 and the big cap techs that led the rally began to decline slightly. In neither case was the selling material and was simply some minor profit taking.
